The Arts Council of Tamworth Presents “Sublime Odissi,” The Art of Classical Indian Dance

The Arts Council of Tamworth was pleased to present “Sublime Odissi,” the art of classical Indian Dance with Mouli Pal, a mesmerizing performer, dedicated teacher, and emerging choreographer.  

Meet the Artist, Mouli Pal on April 1

On Monday, April 1 from 6pm to 7pm, the community was invited to Meet the Artist at the Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth. Mouli performed two dances and made a short presentation on her art form, and her training. She also discussed what she would be doing during her 5-day artist-in-residency at the K.A. Brett School (April 1-5) and her Thursday performance. Her costume, head-dress,  jewelry and ghungroos (ankle bells), each of which is a work of art, were on display. Attendees were also be able to sample Indian snacks. 

An Evening Performance of Odissi on April 5

On Friday, April 5th at 7:30pm, Mouli provided an evening performance at the Public House on Page Hill. Mouli performed a "Pallavi" based on raag Hamsadhawni. This beautiful piece was perfect to set the mood for a festive evening. Prior to the performance, the Public House on Page offered traditional Indian dinner,.

About the Artist, Mouli Pal

Mouli Pal, an exponent of Odissi,has been intensively trained under the personal tutelage of the legendary Maestro Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.  Presently she continues to train under the guidance of eminent Odissi dancer, Smt. Nandini Ghoshal in Kolkata. 

Mouli is regularly presented by prestigious organizations across the United States, India and Austria. Her performances include solo concerts at the prestigious Hopkins Center for Arts at Dartmouth College, Provincetown Dance Festival, Munroe Center (Massachusetts), Yuva Bharati (California), and TriNethra (Massachusetts).  Mouli is also the founder and director of Upasana Odissi, a non-profit that promotes Odissi through concerts and offers scholarships to young deserving college-bound dancers. She teaches widely and mentors about 50 budding Odissi dancers from 5 years to 55-year-olds. 

She has received several awards and grants including the New England Foundation for Arts and Massachusetts Cultural Council. In 2019 she was awarded the "Padmawati Rasthriya Award" by National Cultural Mission in Odisha.
