History

The Arts Council of Tamworth, the first organization of its kind in New Hampshire, has been enriching Tamworth and the surrounding area since 1967. Over those years this grassroots organization has grown from a small group of volunteers helping to set up local cultural events to a well-supported group whose activities include professionally produced performances by local acts as well as nationally and internationally known artists, two art exhibitions a year, diverse workshops for children, several film series, and more.
Today ACT is managed by a board of directors, with the help of a paid coordinator and a dedicated group of volunteers who act as production managers, fundraisers, and grant writers. ACT’s success and longevity can be credited to these key players, to the Tamworth Foundation’s decades of support, to the state and regional arts organizations that provide programming grants, to its many local business sponsors and advertisers, and to a small army of community members who donate their time and energy in myriad ways. All this support helps to keep ACT’s ticket prices and workshop costs low.
As the Arts Council of Tamworth grows into the twenty-first century, it continues to balance adherence to its traditions and values with the desire to innovate, to create new artistic and cultural opportunities for the residents of this town, county, and region, to work in partnership with other arts and educational organizations, and to remain accessible to all community members.
