About ACT

The mission of the Arts Council of Tamworth is to enrich the lives of the people of all ages in Tamworth and surrounding communities through exposure to the diverse arts.

The Arts Council of Tamworth, the first organization of its kind in New Hampshire, has been enriching Tamworth and the surrounding area since 1966. Over those years this grassroots organization has grown from a small group of volunteers helping to set up local cultural events to an organization whose activities have included professionally produced performances by local acts as well as nationally and internationally known artists, an annual art exhibition, arts enrichment for children and the community, and more.

Today ACT is managed by a board of directors, with the help of a paid coordinator and a dedicated group of volunteers who act as production managers, fundraisers, and grant writers. ACT’s success and longevity can be credited to these key players, to the Tamworth Foundation’s decades of support, to the state and regional arts organizations that provide programming grants, to its local business sponsors and advertisers, and to community members who donate their time and energy in myriad ways.

In the twenty-first century, ACT continues to change in response to changing economic and cultural environments. ACT is committed to manifesting its mission through activities that meet a true need in the community, that do not duplicate services offered by other organizations, and that support other organizations with similar missions. Nearly fifty years after its inception, ACT is still working to create new artistic and cultural opportunities for the residents of this town, county, and region, to work in partnership with other arts and educational organizations, and to remain accessible to all community members.

Current projects include:

  • the creation of Art Works, a new gallery space where local artists can show and sell work, offer demonstrations and workshops, and more,
  • growing Art Connects Us!, a site celebrating the arts in Sandwich and Tamworth and serving as a web presence for a handful of local arts organizations,
  • substantial artist residencies in the K. A. Brett School in an effort to provide enrichment to every elementary student in Tamworth,
  • efforts to make performances and workshops more accessible to townspeople, particularly senior citizens.
