Arts Council of Tamworth presents two popular acoustic acts,High Range and Burke & Surette on Saturday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m, at Salyards Center for the Arts in Conway, NH. High Range and Burke & Surette are the first performance in ACT’s North Country Performance Series, which also includes performances by the exciting Irish band Gráda at Salyards on Sunday, March 15, and by 2007 World Music Artist of the Year Mamadou Diabate on Saturday, April 4, at Loynd Auditorium at Kennett High School.
High Range is an energetic roots/folk/bluegrass group with a long list of rave reviews from national publications. They highlight original music with a mix of cover songs on guitar, upright bass, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and drums. “High Range has forged a tight, compelling ensemble sound that is highly musical and thoroughly entertaining,” raves Dave McCarty, reviewer for Bluegrass Unlimited. David Higgs of Nashville Public Radio says, “High Range has a sound all its own—full of surprises, instrumental excellence, some fine vocals and some absolutely killer originals.” Beautifully blended vocals and interwoven instrumental layers come together in High Range’s distinct, expressive style.
Susie Burke and David Surette have made a name for themselves as one of the finest acts on the lively New England folk scene. Together since 1988, Burke and Surette have built a steady following for their own blend of contemporary, traditional and original folk and acoustic music. Burke’s vocal style is at once stunning and heartfelt, and is matched by multi-instrumentalist Surette’s fluid fretwork. “[Burke] possesses one of the finest, purest ballad sopranos heard in folk music today,” writes Scott Alarik in The Boston Globe and Folk Roots Magazine commends Surette’s “exemplary” bouzouki, guitar, and mandolin playing. Burke & Surette are on the NH State Council on the Arts Touring Arts roster, and have released five albums since 1990 on the Madrina Music label.
