Arts Council of Tamworth is thrilled to bring hip-hop theater to the Mount Washington Valley—maybe for the first time! Aaron Jafferis's play Shakespeare: The Remix, with music by Gihieh Lee, will be performed by Collective Consciousness Theatre on Friday, October 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the K. A. Brett School in Tamworth, NH. Colliding original text from Shakespeare’s plays with original rhymes fresh from the mouth of a high school girl, The Remix is an introduction to all that is good, relevant and irreverent in Shakespeare and in hip-hop. When Shayla, a hip-hop-loving high school girl on the verge of dropping out, meets Shakespeare, a 440-year-old ghost having a mid-death crisis, a pitched battle of wits erupts that pits Shayla’s sharp and questioning young mind against Shakespeare’s hunger to prove himself relevant. As Shayla and Shakespeare jump in and out of scenes from Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Merchant of Venice, it is the third character—the “ghost” audience of folks watching the show—that is left most wowed and inspired by the power of words. Tickets are $10 for adults, free for students and children, and will be available at the door only. If you'd like to read more about Shakespeare and hip-hop before the show, click here to download a study guide.
Shakespeare: The Remix kicks off Arts Council of Tamworth's new ACT! for Kids initiative. With the support of all the partners listed below, ACT! for Kids is facilitating two substantial artist residencies at the Brett School this year, and offering several performances for the whole school community. Hip-hop poet and playwright Aaron Jafferis will be in residency for the first three weeks of November, teaching poetry, hip-hop, and spoken word performance to students of all ages. The residency will culminate in a performance by Jafferis and his students at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19. The public is welcome, and interested homeschoolers are also welcome to attend Jafferis's classes with their age group over the course of the residency. Call ACT at 603-323-8104 for schedule information. If you're not able to attend either of the performances you can still learn more about Jafferis's work with local kids—we'll be posting regular updates here throughout the residency. ACT! for Kids in-school performances include Shakespeare: The Remix, the US Air Force Bay State Winds Quartet on Friday, November 5, at 2:00 p.m., and the brilliant Frank Vignola Trio in April. Beloved dance teacher and choreographer Jeanne Limmer will be in residency at Brett in March, 2011. Find out more about all ACT's performances and activities at www.artstamworth.org, and while you're there, sign up to receive updates by email.
