Over the course of the day on Friday, first in the gym at the Brett School, and then in the beautiful and resonant Tamworth Congregational Church in the Village, the Bay State Winds Quartet from the US Air Force Band of Liberty stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts played gorgeous music to around 300 people of all ages. Master Sergeant Jennifer Dashnaw, Technical Sergeant Kevin Connors, Staff Sergeant Matthew Ayala and Staff Sergeant Mickey Ireland took turns introducing the pieces they played, talking about the composers and what we might listen for in the pieces, and speaking about their lives as musicians and soldiers. We thank them so much for educating so engagingly and communicating so clearly, and especially for the moving and exciting program of music they brought to us, containing everything from musical comfort food (Irish Tune from County Derry, better know as "Danny Boy" and a Glenn Miller medley) to familiar tunes played in a new way (Charles Ives' Variations on "America" and America, the Beautiful) to pieces new to many of us (James Waterson's challenging and beautiful Grand Quartet, and Starling, an inventive and lovely recent composition by Australian composer Ian Blake). And more! Thank you, Mickey and Matteo, Jen and Kevin and to everyone who came out to hear them. And a big thank you to Elva Parks for the cookies and brownies!
