“BREAKING THROUGH,” AN EXHIBIT BY SANDWICH ARTIST KATHRYN FIELD, OPENS AT HOLDERNESS SCHOOL’S EDWARDS ART GALLERY

The title “Breaking Through” defines the actions, concepts, and issues that are addressed in the new body of work by Sandwich, NH artist Kathryn Field. The work, including sculptural relief work, drawings, prints, and paintings, is being exhibited in the Edwards Art Gallery at Holderness School from January 11 – February 23. There will be an opening reception on January 11 from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.

Ms. Field is an artist who is versatile in many media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.  Her current exhibit is filled with light, color, and reflective surfaces, and provides a contemporary and innovative way of looking at the traditional study of figure and landscape.

The theme of the exhibit, “Breaking Through,” can be interpreted in three different ways: physical, experimental, and emotional.

In the sculptural relief work, Field physically breaks through the metal surfaces to explore the dynamic between light and shadow, presence and absence. The intangible is viewed in the shadows. The light allows us to see what is not there.

Of the drawing and prints Ms. Field says, “With one line, images are formed and a mood is created. Using this simple line drawing as a source of inspiration, I created a body of work that kept me experimenting and searching for various ways to show the beauty and expressive quality of line as it defines form and mood.” Those attending the exhibit can see the step-by-step process that Field uses to create her finished work. Several drawings explore the same image using different media: ink, charcoal, or oils.

Ms. Field has also challenged herself to document her community in paint. This challenge made her break through the hesitation of asking people to model, and celebrated the wonderful connection created between artist and model through the unique and intimate experience of knowing another individual in shared silence and vulnerability.
