Advice To The Players is pleased to congratulate Angela Smith on being awarded Best Actress in a Professional Drama or Comedy at the New Hampshire Theatre Awards on January 25th. Angela received the award in recognition of her role as Cassius in Advice To The Players' March production of Julius Caesar, directed by Caroline Nesbitt. Other Advice To The Players finalists in the Theatre Awards included Candace Clift (Best Actress for Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing), John Schnatterly (Best Actor for Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing), and Mark Woollett (Best Director for Much Ado About Nothing), as well as Much Ado About Nothing for Best Production.
The Sandwich-based professional Shakespeare company is no stranger to the New Hampshire Theatre Awards; during the ceremony's twelve year history it has regularly garnered acting wins for members of the company and numerous special awards for excellence in production.
Smith, a long-time New Hampshire resident and recent addition to the roster of the Actors Equity Association (the national labor union representing stage professionals), said she was thankful to Caroline Nesbitt for giving her a chance to play the part of Cassius, a character who was historically male and is most often played by a man.
“Casting a woman in this role,” said Smith, “and costuming the production in modern dress, allowed us to use a classic text to take a fresh look at the changing role of women in society, especially in places of power. I was honored to be a part of this process, to have shared this production with such a fantastic group of actors, and to be a part of a company that I'm very, very proud of.”
Smith will be returning once again to a major role in Advice To The Players' March 2014 production of Richard III. She'll be taking on the role of Lady Anne, wooed by Richard in a famously difficult scene. Joining her on stage will be ATTP favorites Bob Bates and Mark Woollett, as well as several newcomers to the company drawn from the ranks of New Hampshire's professional actors: Dan Beaulieu, Artistic Director of Portsmouth's Seven Stages Shakespeare Company, will be taking on the title role as Richard III, and Sharon Paquette, Valerie Rigsbee, and Gary DuBreuil, each well known to stages in New Hampshire and elsewhere, will also be taking on major roles.
Advice To The Players will be hosting a Richard III kick-off party at The Corner House Inn in Center Sandwich on February 19th. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be served, and the pub will be taking drink and food orders as well. Gather, mingle, talk to members of the Advice To The Players production staff, board of trustees, and actors from Richard III. ATTP is also holding a meet and greet for students who are interested in participating in Richard III at The Community School in Tamworth on Thursday, February 6 at 1pm.
