It’s a busy weekend, but consider an entertaining Saturday night on May 15! At 7 p.m., local talent from Tamworth, Sandwich and surrounding towns again takes the stage at one of The Barnstormers’ ever-surprising Variety Nights – with George Cleveland, ever-surprising emcee. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under, available at The Other Store, Tamworth; Mocha Rizing, Sandwich; and at the door. It’s a fundraiser for the theatre, to help the summer plays AND help us make the building energy-efficient so we can be open in the winter again and useable by community groups.

To the best of our present knowledge, the lineup will include:

Trish Jackson, Micah Jackson & Manny Ham Ying, Sandwich – jazz/rock – vocals, guitar & bass

Alison Pugh and friends – modern dance

Bun Nickerson – stories – with Chris Canfield

Brian Hastings – original songs with guitar

Community Steel Drum Band

Peggy Johnson & Kate Vachon – piano and flute pieces

Nat Scrimshaw – a story of escape from wartime Paris, with drawings

Annie Barnard & Suzy Kjellberg – Tamworth limericks

Tony Iorfino and Spud Miller – guitars & vocal

Andy Cabell (once a Barnstormer baby!) – juggling

Emily Robinson & Clara Hodges, The Community School – guitar & vocals

Spread the word!

Hope to see you there,

Award-winning musician Dharmashakti (Deian McBryde) is back again this year on his East Coast tour (home is New Mexico), joined by talented multi-instrumentalist Christian Patrick, to lead us in an evening of devotional chanting this Thursday, May 13, at 7:00 PM. Integral Yoga Institute of NYC says “…devotion, talent and intelligence…funky, jazzy, experimental and soft. Truly a unique Kirtan experience!” $15 in advance (buy here), $20 at the door. Children under 12 are half price ($7.50 in advance / $10 at the door). Kirtan is preceded by a community potluck dinner (vegetarian, please) from 6-7 PM. Mocha Rizing will be here to offer treats, teas, coffee, and chai to go along with meals or to bring up during the chanting. Lots of meditation cushions available for floor seating, but we also have chairs, and people are welcome to dance in the sidelines and in the back if they are moved! Join us for another amazing experience in music and song, a great opportunity to sing out, or just listen, and feel a sense of community around you! Visit www.dharmashakti.com for more information.

There will be an Evening of Entertainment at the Tamworth Congregational Church, Main Street, Tamworth, Sunday April 25, at 7:00 p.m. The concert of classical music – instruments and voices – will raise funds to benefit the church restoration fund. The current project is painting the interior and exterior of the church.

Performers giving their talents for the evening include Marion Posner with classical spoken voice; Allan DiBiase, teacher and accompanist from PSU with singers Jennifer Fijal, mezzo-soprano, and Heather Jacques, soprano; Ron Wold, French horn with Peggy Johnson, piano, and Chris Nourse, viola; and a special gathering of The Friends of the TCC Orchestra, Chris Nourse and Friends.

The steeple of the Congregational Church rises above the riverside village of Tamworth and is visible from many angles and distances, anchoring the village and standing out against mountain backdrops. This image graces countless place mats, calendars, postcards and canvases. The interior of the building is no less sublime: large, simple, and built to carry a speaker’s voice easily to every ear in the room, the acoustics are outstanding. The original pews have comfortable cushions, and for your further comfort, the congregation has recently installed plumbing!

The Congregational Church of Tamworth hosts a series of several benefit Evenings of Entertainment each year, some to benefit other organizations, some to benefit their own projects. Through these delightful fundraising events, the church has helped with projects as diverse as its own new roof and Kennett’s Project Graduation, and the community has enjoyed first rate, varied entertainment close to home.

Tickets for the Classical Concert on Sunday, April 25th are $10 at the door. Refreshments will be served. Call 323-8504 for more information.

On Saturday, March 27 at 7 p.m., Mocha Rizing in Center Sandwich will present two-time Grammy nominee Jose Lezcano and Franziska Huhn, from the New England Conservatory in Boston, as part of its Winter Rizing Music Series.

In this intimate setting, Jose and Franziska will be performing music evocative of Latin America, Spain, and Armenia; from exciting dance rhythms to rapturous melodies and mystic moods, composed or arranged for the exotic combination of guitar and harp.

Dr. José Manuel Lezcano is described by the New Millennium Guitar Magazine as “a superb guitarist as well as a first-rate composer and arranger.” He has captivated audiences on four continents. His programs featuring traditional and Latin American repertory, and his own original compositions have taken him as recitalist, collaborative musician, and concerto soloist from Carnegie Recital Hall and the North-South Consonance Series in New York City to major venues and festivals throughout the world. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1960, Lezcano was invited to join the faculty of Keene State College in New Hampshire in 1991, where he is Professor of Music.

He has lectured throughout the state for the NH Humanities Council on Ecuadorean indian guitar traditions, rituals, and mythology. Dr. Lezcano’s own Guitar Concerto (2004), which he premiered in New York City as soloist with the North-South Consonance Chamber Orchestra directed by Max Lifschitz, has received critical acclaim after release on the North-South label in 2007 as “Remembrances/Recuerdos.” For his work on the CD, Jose received two Grammy nominations and was semi-finalist for “Best Contemporary Composition” and “Best Performance, Soloist with Orchestra”.

At the age of fourteen, harpist Franziska Huhn took first prize in the prestigious Jugend Musiziert Competition in Germany. Subsequently, she went on to receive a full scholarship to study with Lucille Lawrence and earn a Bachelor of Music degree at Boston University. Ms. Huhn continued her studies with Boston Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Ann Hobson Pilot on a full scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she completed a Masters Degree in Harp performance and a Graduate Diploma, in addition to becoming the first ever harpist to be awarded the Artist’s Diploma by the Conservatory in 2005.

Ms. Huhn has performed in Japan, and at the Tanglewood Music Center in 1999 and 2000. She later returned to Tanglewood to perform contemporary music as a Fromm player in 2003. Ms. Huhn is also active in and around the Boston area performing as a substitute harpist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. As a solo performer, Ms. Huhn has given recitals throughout the United States and international recitals including several performances for the German President (Johannes Rau, Horst Köhler).
