Spring 2009
Dear Friends,
Over the past several weeks we’ve had a chance to reflect on some of the wonderful moments from the last season:
Listening to Albert Kim playing Debussy’s “Footsteps in the Snow” at Saint Andrew’s while sparkling crystals drifted down outside. One patron said, “I wish everyone I know had come to this concert, including those I love who have died.”
The bunch of young Irish musicians who comprise Gráda serving up a rollicking concert after driving nine hours from upstate New York, and then wanting to jam with local musicians into the wee hours.
The sight, during intermission, of half the audience clustered on the stage examining the 21-string kora Mamadou Diabate had made with his father’s help. Many of us were seeing and hearing the instrument for the first time—and hearing the roots of jazz in the traditional West African songs Mamadou played.
Children dancing and painting, listening as part of an audience of all ages to the mesmerizing storyteller Simon Brooks, watching Sir George sort out his troubles with the dragon, and singing with members of Revels Repertory Company.
This has been a big year for us: we have unveiled a new website, strategically planned for the future, and even joined Facebook! As we move with the times we remain true to our mission: to produce exciting, diverse, inspiring, affordable shows, to create opportunities for local artists, and to offer creative workshops and performances for children at little or no cost. We want great opportunities to interact with art and artists to be available close to home and accessible to all.
We do this for our community—for you—and with your support. In trying financial times we believe ever more strongly that we need the arts to nourish us, to help us tell our story to ourselves and to each other, to enrich our lives and our children’s lives, and to bring us together as a community. Please consider a tax-deductible donation of $50 or $100, or any amount: $1.00 would keep us in paper clips for months! Or $2.00—we’re more fun than a cup of coffee! Because we do not have property to maintain, 100 percent of your donation goes toward programs and performances. Send a check or donate above; a PayPal account is not necessary. While you’re here, check out our upcoming performance lineup and see examples of the power of art to entertain and sustain us.
With many thanks for your support in all forms, we remain yours,
Annie Riecken, for the ACT Board of Directors
