Cheick Hamala Diabate
At the intersect of West African storytelling, poetry and music, oral history and performance, Cheick Hamala Diabate is king of the ngoni–a plucked West African lute and precursor to the banjo–and a griot, a West African storyteller/poet.
Grammy-nominated for Best Traditional World Music Album, a collaboration with Bob Carlin, Cheick (pronounced “shake”) has also performed with Bela Fleck, Corey Harris, and well-known Malian and African performers. A sought-after performer, lecturer, storyteller and choreographer throughout Africa, Europe, Asia, Canada and the U.S, Cheick Hamala dazzles, whether he’s playing ngoni, guitar or banjo, and whether he’s solo, in a traditional trio or rocking with his 10-piece orchestra.
